  19. Some may consider this off topic, but I have seen many users who have not been
  20. able to retrieve ftp files due to lack of this protocol with their accounts.
  21. But ftp files can be had with just an email account... But be warned... These
  22. files are generally quite large, and can fill your alotted filespace very
  23. fast.  BEFORE you use ftp by email, check with your webmaster to find out what
  24. restrictions he imposes, and then be sure to clear your account frequently.
  25. Also, you will need to get your hands on a UUdecoder for your machine and
  26. learn how to use it.  UUdecoders can be found on your local bbs's or on
  27. shareware disks you may have, just like LHA, ZIP and the like.  For those who
  28. don't know, UUencoding is a way to send a binary file via vanilla ascii, as an
  29. email message.  When you get a uuencoded message, you save it out as a file
  30. and then convert it with the uudecoder, as you would a zip or lha file....

  32. Anyway, send mail to an ftpmail server.  I use bitftp@pucc.princeton.edu and
  33. am quite happy with it.. it's very fast.

  35. In the message body, type:

  37. open <ftp address> of the site you wish to access
  38.

  40. dir (to return a directory listing of the current directory)
  41. chdir <dir> to change directories
  42. binary (to set the mode to a binary transfer (uuencoded automatically)
  43. CHUNKSIZE 0 (so that it does not split the file into smaller ones)
  44. get <filename> (to initiate a send)
  45. quit (to end the session)

  47. you can retrieve multiple files this way also... each get command on it's own
  48. line. You can also change directories mid stream by using the chdir ../ form.

  51. Remember that Unix IS case sensitive, so spell the filenames and directories
  52. exactly as shown.
